Some time during The Ryecatchers second mayhem-filled tour of England, Paul Gibbons (singer, bass, piano, all around creative director and founder of the band) decided that, even after 8 years of intense work to develop the group, it was time for a step up in a new direction, a new start.
Upon returning to Canada, Gibbons obtained a VideoFact grant, and a video was released and aired on Muchmusic for his Ryecatchers song called "Tease" but sadly it was indeed just that for the band's fans, as the band had officially split.
Paul decided to get back in touch with his blues roots, and found himself jamming on the piano with his old teachers. Through a contact at the blues jams, who was so impressed by Paul's skills and his history with the Ryecatchers, asked Paul to try out for a high profile cover band.
After a stint as the bass player and a co-singer in the local Roxy Night Club cover band (Troys R Us) and enjoying many opportunities with them, such as playing live with the Blues Brother Dan Akoryd, Paul decided to focus on the studio and the development of his new project, Smythesizer.
Given the new freedom to fully explore his musical quest, Gibbons embarked on a journey to expand his creative talent without the limitations faced within the Beatles influenced Ryecatchers.
Gibbons has spent his time performing solo all around Vancouver while developing new tunes in the studio, and honing in on a new line up, with the new material. The new musical direction finds inspiration in the new wave 80's music melding with modern dark pop music genres, while hints of his 60's influences.
The first album from Smythesizer is due for completion in 2008.
